During the Revolutionary War, an unexploded British cannonball became lodged in the wall of St. Paul's Church! But don’t be scared! It has since been replaced by a replica, a copy, due to safety concerns.

If you were here . . . .
We would have lots of fun together! You first! What would you like to do? Great! Just hanging out is cool! I would like to go to the Virginia Opera at the Harrison Opera House. Would you like to come with me? We would have to be very quiet, however, or they may ask us to leave! We could always sing our duet later! Sometimes, though, the Opera has special events for the entire family. Then, you don’t have to be so quiet!
If art is your “thing”, we should visit the Chrysler Museum. You can learn a lot about art at an art museum! We might also enjoy a trip to the botanical garden or the zoo !
We could learn about the sea and much more at Nauticus, too. And, since Norfolk is near the water, we could also have some fun at the beach! At nearby Virginia Beach we could visit the Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center
Does that sound like fun to you?
But don’t “wave" |

goodbye just yet! |
Just for fun, move your mouse over the wave! |
Here is something else that you might find interesting about Norfolk!
Norfolk’s “logo”, its symbol, is a mermaid! Do you know what a mermaid is? Let’s find out! Wordsmyth says that a mermaid is: an imaginary sea creature with the head and upper body of a woman and the lower body and tail of a fish.

Do you think mermaids like ice cream cones?
In 1907 the Abraham Doumar family moved to Norfolk and began selling ice cream at Ocean View Park in Virginia Beach. The owners of Doumar's Cones and BBQ in Norfolk, Virginia, claim that their uncle, Abe Doumar, sold the first ice cream cones at the St. Louis World's Fair in 1904. In 1905, they made the first ice cream cone machine which they still use in their Norfolk restaurant today! How about that! |
